Text
I create papier mâché vignettes celebrating women of strong constitution. These emancipated thinkers and achievers are secure in their talents and sense of style; which adds to their charm.
Papier mâché gives the figure a sturdy and textured quality, which mirrors the life of the character portrayed.
Fashion, location and action convey emotional and cultural ideas. By reinforcing identity through these avenues these figures become a reminder of values such as self-confidence, ritual and the spirit of play.
My sculptures are a collective of women spanning time and place. I imagine a life full of adventure and accolades and I choose, through my work, to give reverence to women of substance.

Gallery should display:

- Title

Artist Biography
Joan Ragan Kállay was born in Davenport, Iowa, in 1961. She spent her childhood surrounded by vast fields of corn and grand Victorian and Italianate mansions along the bluffs of the Mississippi River. She is the sixth of seven siblings, all female. Family vacations introduced her to the forested mountains of the Pacific Northwest.
She attended The University of Montana and received a B.F.A. with emphasis in painting and drawing. Reflecting on the inhabitants of the historical homes on the bluffs, her thesis exhibit focused on portraits of Victorian women and their assigned roles as daughter, wife and mother.
Joan also earned a Montana teaching certificate and has taught Art at both private therapeutic boarding schools and public schools; junior high and high school. She has written and conducted several professional development Art Education curriculum workshops for teachers to earn certificate renewal credit through the Montana Education Association and the Montana Office of Public Instruction.
As Associate Education Curator at both the Hockaday Museum of Art in Kalispell, Montana and the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno, Joan’s expertise in art education was put to good use in their family and school services outreach programs.
Returning to The University of Montana for her M.F.A. she focused on costume design; handsomely constructed women’s garments from 1860-1920, one for each decade, examining how women’s roles in society compared with the altered silhouette.
Joan’s current works are sculpted papier mâché vignettes celebrating women of strong constitution. These emancipated thinkers and achievers are secure in their talents and sense of style; which adds to their charm.
Fashion, location and action convey emotional and cultural ideas. By reinforcing identity through these avenues the figures become a reminder of values such as self-confidence, ritual and the spirit of play.
The mountains, softer winters and true love anchors Joan to her home and studio in Whitefish, Montana.

Artist Statement
Holding a book in my hands is a satisfying experience. Be it a journal waiting for my mark, a photo album, a collection of poems or a treasured novel; books ground me and make me happy. A natural transition for me was to begin making books ready to contain new stories.
It’s fun choosing the elements required for bookmaking; cover, signatures and binding thread. During the construction phase I imagine how someone will personalize the pages; documenting ideas, drawing from observation, or recording a dream. Collectively the end result is visually and tacitly rewarding.
In my travels I have found handcrafted books are well received gifts.
The two forms of bookbinding represented here are Japanese Stab binding and Long Stitch binding. The Japanese Stab binding showcases the paper being used and has a more elegant appearance. This type of binding does not allow the user to open it completely were as the Long Stitch binding can be opened 180◦. The Long Stitch binding can either be visible or hidden and allows for more signatures to be added creating a larger book. My book covers are made from recycled boxes, painted grocery bags or paper collected during my travels.
